Accredited since 1986 by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities for Comprehensive Integrated Inpatient Rehabilitation Program, St. Mary's Institute is located at on the campus of St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville, Indiana. The main campus location allows the rehabilitation patient to benefit from additional acute care services available at the medical center, including specialist consultations and additional diagnostic testing. In 2009, CARF International announced that accreditation was also added to St. Mary's Rehab Institute for its inpatient rehab programs for adult brain injury and child and adolescent brain injury. Each patient unit has a therapy gym with equipment and tools to improve strength and work towards resuming normal activities. An independent living apartment is located on the nursing unit, which allows patients to practice home management and self care skills before they leave the hospital. Accessibility Avenue is a simulated community environment located inside the St. Mary's Rehabilitation Institute building that provides an area to practice car transfers, shopping and public dining experiences prior to returning home.
