Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific (REHAB) is the only acute-care medical rehabilitation organization serving Hawaii. Founded more than 56 years ago, the 100-bed hospital and outpatient clinics on Oahu and the Big Island provide a range of medical rehabilitation services. REHAB treats patients recovering from strokes, brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopedic injuries, sports injuries and those individuals requiring general rehabilitation. Services to patients include physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.
REHAB offers an inpatient brain injury rehabilitation program that involves the patient, family members, caregivers, and members of the rehabilitation team. Each patient’s program can be tailored based on their needs, and family members are provided with education, training and support.
Traumatic brain injured patients are admitted from an emerging Level III- IV on the Rancho Los Amigos Scale of Cognitive Functioning. This means that the patient is able to follow simple commands more consistently and can, therefore, participate in therapy. Individuals in a deep coma state are not accepted for admission. Should the patient’s state of consciousness change to a more alert level, the Admissions Coordinators, who are registered nurses, can reassess for admission to the program, or make a recommendation for a physiatry (a physician who is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation) consultation.
