A brief summary of current research.
Visual Dysfunction Following Blast-Related Traumatic Brain Injury from the Battlefield
Dougherty, AL, MacGregor, AJ, Han, PP, Heltemes, KJ and Galarneau, MR. Brain Injury, Vol. 25 (1), 2011, pp 8-13.
Researchers reviewed the medical records of service members who had sustained blast-related injuries in Operation Iraqi Freedom. They found that blast-related TBI is strongly associated with visual disorders within one year after an injury. They also found that the odds of a visual disorder appear to increase with the severity of brain injury. The authors suggest that comprehensive vision examinations following TBI in theater may be necessary.
